“The University is taking the necessary steps to ensure the School of Divinity’s most precious archival materials are in safekeeping,” said Dean Rev. Kenyatta Gilbert.
I am with Jouelzy on this one... especially now with the attacks on books and the truth. I hope Howard treats these treasures with the grace and care they deserve.
On the crime itself... *sigh* I just can't with this kind of behavior... why would you spray a fire extinguisher!??
The reason why so much of the collection is in poor condition at Howard and so many other libraries, archives, and museums, is because the cost to have an updated HVAC system with temperature and humidity staying at a constant, archival enclosures to house fragile and damaged materials, and sending materials off to be conserved is incredibly expensive. Staffing can also be an issue and these places can often be short staffed. Many institutions rely on grants in which writing the applications can be time intensive and are very competitive, or on the generosity of donors, especially if there is little to no budget for preservation and conservation.
Anyone criticizing these places for the supposed lack of care for their rare collections might consider making a monetary donation to Howard to assist with their preservation efforts.
As a former student of HUSD, I’m not surprised. The School never cared about any of its precious archives. So, leaving all those archives unattended & unsecured, is par for the course

Truly ridiculous but expected given the addiction to outrage certain groups have to perceived offenses or injustices. Very troubling!
