As the social media platform formerly known as Twitter increasingly becomes a place where things like context and detail go to die, I’ve decided to launch a podcast component to my newsletter to help talk through some of the stories you might see me share, or other stories within the news cycle.
For my first episode, I figured I should start with the whiplash millions of student loan borrowers experienced over the past few days, after when several news outlets and journalists — including me! — shared that the Biden administration would be allowed to move forward with its student loan cancellation plan. While the news was technically true, some of the headlines went a bit too far and needed further explanation.
The student loan forgiveness issue is particularly sore for Black Americans, who are more likely to take on student loans than white students. We generally hold more student debt for years after graduation.
So what actually happened?
Braxton Brewington, the press secretary for the debt advocacy group Debt Collective, joined me to discuss.
Note: You can read his thread on X that we talk about during the show here.
