Tiny Alabama town will be allowed to vote for first time in decades
Residents in a small Alabama town will be able to vote in their own municipal elections for the first time in decades after a four-year legal battle.
No, that headline is not a typo.
After a four-year legal battle, residents of Newbern, Alabama, will be able to vote in municipal elections for the first time in over 60 years.
A proposed settlement has been reached in the town’s voting rights case, allowing the predominantly Black town of 133 residents to hold its first legitimate elections in more than 60 years. The town’s next elections will be held in 2025.
You may remember the Capital B story of Patrick Braxton, who became the first Black mayor of Newbern in 2020. But the former mayor and white councilmembers reappointed themselves without anyone knowing.
The settlement will reinstate Braxton as the mayor of Newbern.
"A proposed settlement was filed with the Court on Friday, June 21st. The judge has not yet ruled on the proposed settlement, but we are hopeful for a positive outcome,” the Legal Defense Fund said in a statement.
Leave it to a librarian to be the only white person to say something positive. This is so frustrating to read and watch, and makes me so angry for this community. It also bothers me that one of the town council members says she feels guilty about allowing this to happen! She doesn’t need to feel this way when the people who are wronging the community should have that burden instead. It kills me, that guy thinks it’s a hereditary monarchy and what, he’s king of Newbern? Here’s hoping Patrick Braxton gets it resolved and changed for the better for everyone.
…remember corporations are entities therefore can vote…? …democracy MY ASS !!! …we are so fucked, regardless of who’s in WH
