In New Orleans, a ‘Black Beach’ Is Being Rescued From the Ruins, The New York Times
During the era of Jim Crow and segregation, there was only one place on Lake Pontchartrain where Black people were allowed to swim and have fun: Lincoln Beach.
When it closed shortly after the passing of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, the beach fell into disrepair. Now, thanks to the help of local volunteers, the area is making a comeback.
