Are you talking to me, specifically? If so, you're way off base. H1-B visas have existed for decades, under both Democratic and Republican administrations. The numbers allowed per year are Congressionally mandated (not the President/VP's choice). What I am laughing at is the GOP turning on itself - those opposed to all immigration versus those who want to continue allowing H1-B visas to be issued to people who will work for less than US Citizens.
Yes, both parties have been responsible for this, but Biden/Harris in particular relaxed enforcement of the rules given their authority as enforcers of the rules. They also chose DHS, DOL and USCIS appointees to pull this off
Its not just H1B, its the whole legal immigration racket and many of the other visas have no caps. H1B also has employers that are exempt from the cap, PLUS uncapped H4s for spouses PLUS F1/OPT PLUS L1 PLUS renewals of H1Bs are uncapped
Laugh all you want now, when your job is on the line (and it likely will be in the future) you will not laugh
GOP is actually quite united on this, as is the US public (to the tune of 60%), its just elon and the billionaires who oppose it. and billions of dollars doesn't matter when you get crushed in the next election, which those who oppose legal immigration reductions most certainly will
Dude, I am a former Consular Officer. Don't preach the INA to me. I'm also retired, so no one is coming for my job. CONGRESS is in control of legal immigration and its numbers, NOT the POTUS or VPOTUS. Get a grip. Our country NEEDS legal immigration for many reasons.
Disabled people would like a word with you. The list is too long to tell you how many people would like to point out your hypocrisy, white nationalist.
Preach Phil Lewis. One of my favorite Indian scholars Vijay Prashad always said “White folks try to create Southeast Asians as a model minority so they can weaponize us against Black Americans.”
There are fortunately some very woke Indians, Pakistanis, etcetera that are laughing at this fool too! Trust.
H1-B visas were/are all the rage bc imported labor works for less and *any* efforts toward equality (re: unions, discrimimation, harassment) can quickly be snuffed: pulling the visa means no job and leave the country. It's indentured servitude and promotes vast power imbalances. It's one more reason identity politics is bankrupt.
These are the same people who want to abolish the Department of Education! Where might we find Americans to do those jobs? By educating them here.
After Sputnik in 1957, politicians got their panties in a twist because the American educational system was not turning out scientists and engineers, so they created NASA. They also began funding education in a way not seen before. I was in high school then. Suddenly there were advanced courses for science and math. Later classes for many subjects that were accelerated were offered in high schools around the country. But over time enthusiasm for these programs has sort of slipped. The U.S. has always been a basically anti-intellectual country, so expecting it to maintain advanced classes for the bulk of students always had to deal with know-nothings on school boards and being pressured to reduce costs by local governments.
I think our education system, K-12, should be run federally so that every school in the country has an equal budget and thus equal opportunities for every American student. No more book banning by ignoramuses, no more poor schools in poor neighborhoods or rich schools in rich neighborhoods. Every school offering the same basic curriculum, which should include not just math and science but also English language skills, art, music, history, civics, and physical education. Some schools might offer tennis or swimming as extra-curricular, some as part of the P.E. program. When I was in high school both of the schools I attended offered field hockey (which I hated) and gymnastics (where my back got injured on the trampoline). We played baseball in gym class and also on our recess. These days I guess there is more interest in soccer. Cool. Anything that gets kids moving is all for the good. But it shouldn’t be all there is, as is often the case. Our graduates should understand our system of government. If we had a better educated public we might be able to avoid criminals like Trump ever being elected to anything.
But for any of these things to happen there needs to be a complete rethinking of our educational system. Unfortunately, the current batch of Republicans does not want a country full of better educated citizens. Their bread and butter depends on ignorant, poorly educated people. All Muskrat and Ramasmarmy want is employees educated in England to work here as indentured servants for less than they would pay an American.
Both of them have more money than they know what to do with but has either of them offered to set up scholarships for deserving American youth? For any public school at all? Instead of helping others, they are set to cut spending across the board in the government they have never participated in. They have no idea of what our government, imperfect though it is, does for the citizens of this country. It’s they who need civics classes.
Time for me to rejoin AARP to see if the Chicago chapter has plans to go to D.C. to defend seniors’ rights.
Besides, federally managed programs do just fine, if it comes to that. I live on Social Security and I never had decent health insurance until I qualified for Medicare. These programs work quite well. It’s Medicare Advantage that takes advantage of federally operated Medicare. They deny claims regularly, just like every other privately managed health insurance program. We need Medicare for all. If we had that maybe disgruntled claimants would not be out there assassinating health company executives. There’s actually nothing wrong with the federal government managing anything.
My dad retired from the federal government. He got a good pension and benefits. I also worked there briefly. People who work for the federal government are usually well-trained people who are knowledgeable in their fields. Not all are experts, but they know what kind of work their agency does.
You’ll soon get a lesson in how things stop working when Trump and his cronies try to destroy “the administrative state.” The disaster that looms will punish the country for electing a criminal rapist to the presidency. Were I not also about to get a kick in the teeth I’d laugh my head off, but since I stand a chance of being utterly destroyed by them, I don’t see anything funny about what’s about to happen.
We could have had a competent woman with a competent Cabinet. Instead we’ll have another round of being hung by our thumbs on account of stupidity and greed. Hope it makes you and all the rest of the morons who voted for Trump happy.
"Medicare for all" is just another way of phrasing "Socialism" and Socialism moves straight into Communism. Good luck with that. Here in California we already have "socialized" Healthcare, that is for Illegals. Yet I'm born and raised here and actually have to pay for my insurance. And Covered California is unfortunately the only thing I can "afford" And it's the crappiest coverage I've ever had. Before I was FIRED from my 14yr career that I loved for saying no to the vx. I had great Healthcare. Yes, I paid for it but it was well worth it. Do I think Healthcare needs to be restructured? Yes, I do. But socialized or Medicare for all is definitely not the answer.
The department of education needs to be abolished and restructured. Here in California our schools/education are 29th on the list and continue to decline daily. Yet "Tony Thurmond" who's the "State Superintendent of Public Instruction" literally pissed away $80 billion meant for our schools and education system. Oh and he's a "Black" man. So I highly doubt any of this had anything to do with race. And I'm so relieved that DEI is on it's way out. Thank you Mr. President! Also yes, the education systems in place in the US have been failing for a very long time. My husband is a legal German immigrant, who's also a hot shot machinist. In large part due to his actual education, skills and willingness to want to actually grow and learn new advanced technologies everyday.
Math, reading, social studies, science, real education needs to be brought back to the "United States of America" 🇺🇸
I may agree with some of your goals, but find some of your means repugnant. Federally managed public schools? I’d hate it, kids would hate it. Nearly everyone would hate it. I think even you would hate it. Better schools everywhere with universal access to them? Absolutely! If the feds have a role in education, it is in setting broad, measurable standards incentivized by funding. Implementation should be as close to the classroom as possible.
Disappointed is the mildest description of my reaction to attempts to discredit people by “cleverly” butchering their names. It’s a grade school tactic, no matter who uses it.
We do under-estimate the capacity of children to understand what goes on in Congress, state houses, and local Commissions, Councils, Boards, etc.. They see it all on the playground. It’s less structured there, but no less ruthless, deceptive, or manipulative, and no less democratic or autocratic. Civics is a tired old word, but whatever subject matter it includes, it has been under-taught since at least 1955, when a very good school system fed me a watered-down version in all of a day or two. Y’know: Bill, debate, House, Senate, President, Law. Then how to write a check and address a letter. So we have no contemporary model that I know of in this country to find examples of how best (or when) to teach concepts around governance, civil discourse, critical thinking, personal finance, or economics in public schools. But finding or devising, and using such model is long overdue. So we agree there.
As I told someone else, making a joke from the names of people I hate is one of the few things that brings an old lady joy. Sorry it offends your delicate sensibilities. I’m not in the least bit sorry.
My suggestion was for federally set standards. The IRS abides by federal laws, so do many other federal agencies. Why not standards about what should be taught in schools? National standards. This should leave room for adaptations depending on location of the schools.
I said national standards. I did not mean that individual schools should be taught by federally employed teachers, although I see no problem at all with the government paying a portion of teachers’ salaries, to make certain that all teachers everywhere are paid a living wage.
I see no reason whatsoever for anyone making comments to write angry, insulting things to me; however, had you been taught to speak civilly to other people in a discussion you might be able to express yourself better. That’s what good schooling does for people. It’s what a good teacher can help his/her students learn how to do. So of course I have blocked you.
You have misunderstood what I said. Anti-intellectual means hostile to learning. I’m not talking about standardized testing. I come from a family in rural Ohio. None of my cousins on my mother’s side of the family have very much if any higher education. One cousin is illiterate. She didn’t have to be, she chose to be because my aunt and uncle didn’t think education was important. She imbibes a ton of right wing crap. We don’t speak anymore.
We don’t pay teachers in many schools a living wage. Local governments will cut from schools before most other things. They will cut from art and the humanities first. All local leaders seem to want is to have students meet a metric that can be measured by standardized tests. People in this country often don’t know how the government is organized. They often don’t know who their congresspeople are. They often don’t understand the structure of the government until times like we’re in now when they start losing the benefits they receive from the government. I remember several years ago hearing people tell the government to leave their Medicare alone without actually knowing that Medicare is a government health insurance program. They could learn the reality all around them but they choose not to. Many watch Fox “News” and nothing else. And it’s Rupert Murdoch’s worldview they are getting, not an American one. Murdoch is Australian, not American. But they would rather believe a known liar than do any research to find the truth. That is the very definition of anti-intellectual. I stand by my statement.
Got Word Salad? Gosh. “The U.S. has always been a basically anti-intellectual country…” is absurd. America had superb literacy rates envied by the rest of the world, from the start. Read some of the letters written home by Civil War soldiers of the North or South—their vocabulary and diction put most college students’ writing to shame. Why? Because there was better education in the time of Little House on the Prairie than after government Globalists captured our system—read John Taylor Gatto’s books about that. And the late great Russian cellist Msistlav Rostropovich once said America has the best symphony orchestras, the best universities, etc, so there’s all that to recapture. Because we already had it before.
Sorry, I don’t pay taxes at all because I don’t make very much money. California doesn’t rank high in a lot of things. I personally don’t like California. Too many Californians for my taste. I’m a New Yorker even though I don’t live there anymore. In fact I live in Chicago, very midwestern, which I also don’t much like. I’d move back to New York in a heartbeat but alas , it’s become too pricey for me.
As I understand it, DoE supervises student loans, all kinds of education programs for elementary and secondary schools, programs for poor students, special ed programs, and various other programs. What is it exactly you think they don’t do well? I got student loans from them and none of my aid was ever screwed up.
It's fun watching these clowns get a little taste of what they've been shoveling for nearly a decade. It was even funnier watching Bluesky ban Laura the Loomertic before she could even start spewing her bile there, and the whining that ensued. Welp, buckle up magaloids, I got a feeling you're about to get a lot MORE of "your own medicine", as well as the bitter taste of just how badly you screwed the pooch on this one. It'll suck for ALL of us, but it's REALLY gonna suck for you, when it FINALLY dawns on you, that you are NOT, in fact, as "special" as you thought you were.
Please say it louder for the people in the back. If you are into polls-A recent poll showed most Latinos supported mass deportation. Black people were the least supportive. Go figure.
casual dehumanization ... this is the phrase I've been trying to encapsulate my feelings
I really need to understand. The people currently affected by immigration raids couldn’t vote nor do they deserve this. Immigrants without legal status do not deserve to be told “I told you so” because they did not vote for this because they cannot legally vote. Only naturalized citizens with legal status are allowed to vote in Federal elections. Claiming/insinuating that voting for the other candidate would have helped the same community of immigrants without legal status is also not true. Neither candidate was protecting this group so why are people like you so quick to say “I told you so”. Also, for the many people saying things like “who will pick our food now,” that is extremely dehumanizing. Immigrant people are more than their labor and they deserve to be treated equally. When you say “latinos” you do realize that that includes the many people from many different backgrounds right? That’s like calling someone an American… Like saying “Americans elected Donald Trump so they deserve what is happening” is untrue because there is many communities who did not want this, the same applies to the communities of undocumented immigrants. They are victims of this system too.
There are very few Illegals that actually work our farms and are picking our food. Those are who came here the right way, went through the proper channels and raised their families here with very Christian values.
The Illegals that are being deported are "criminals, gangs, cartels, child traffickers, sex traffickers etc" I don't want them in my neighborhood, gtfo. I'm married to a legal German immigrant. So no, I have nothing against immigrants. There are systems and laws in place for a reason.
And you say Illegals can't vote anyway? Apparently you don't live in California. In the last election I was an "election Observer" not just myself but the "election workesr" were instructed "We CANNOT ask for any form of ID, PERIOD" This is per the Cali government. So yes, sorry. In the last election ANYONE could vote.
Religion shouldn’t matter because we are in a country that allows everyone to choose what they want to follow. There’s literally been U.S. citizens arrested by ICE and you have the audacity to say they’re only arresting “criminals” and PLEASE refrain from bringing up other people’s crimes when you voted a felon into the oval office. You don’t actually care about criminals because you have no problem with one running the country. Undocumented immigrants cannot vote, no matter how much Donald Trumps wants to claim that they do. “Very few pick our fruits” 😂 you’re literally stupid I’m so sorry but you’re so uninformed and yet here you are spitting lies and hatred. You have no Christian values if you let the word “illegal” come out of your mouth. Guess what? Jesus was an immigrant and a refugee. The bible teaches us love and acceptance and you have the audacity to use “Christianity” as a reason to dislike immigrants? You have been brainwashed beyond comprehension.
Not even worth waisting my breath on to comment. You obviously DON'T LIVE IN CALIFORNIA or you would know all this to be factual. Apparently you skipped over the part where I was "ACTUALLY AN ELECTION OBSERVER" And those "orders" NOT TO CHECK ANYONE'S ID'S came directly from the governors office. So go ahead and continue to fling verbal shit, if it make you feel better. "I know the TRUTH and that's really all that matters"
"SO HAPPY I AWAKENED AND CAME TO MY SENSES IN 2014 AND #WALKEDAWAY from a lifetime of being a Demoncrat. Thank you Jesus 🙏🏻
Yeah it’s definitely not worth my time to go back & forth with someone who allegedly cannot waste their breath replying to me but then proceeds to type rows and rows of sentences. I read what you said fully. You can thank Jesus all you want but you don’t know him nor follow his teachings. My favorite part about the possibility of anything from the Bible being true is that the people like you who think they have a seat reserved next to God will actually burn in hell for spending your time on earth being hateful and discriminatory. If Jesus showed up at your front door you’d question his legal status or discriminate him if he’s brown & that should embarrass you deeply. You have been fooled to blame minorities for the problems caused by billionaires. People like you who see everything black/white or….democrat/republican have a real harsh awakening coming your way. It was not so nice speaking with you, you are foolish and ignorant, I hope you actually find God one day because right now you seem very lost. ✌️
People that sheltered Jews in WW2 & participants in the US slavery Underground Railroad are today revered as heroes. Today buildings have plaques bragging that they were a part of the Underground Railroad whereas during slavery sheltering runaways was illegal & subject to severe penalties so few were actually brave enough to participate. I wonder if years from now … there will be any heroes recognized from our generation for sheltering immigrants from being taken to the MAGA concentration camps?
Very silly, manufactured nonsense. Any argument predicated on group identity is a priori dumb and I won't even bother to listen to it.
The H1-B visa program is a way to get cheaper labor from abroad; there are plenty of qualified technologists in the United States. Vivek and Elon would like to undercut their value by bringing in hacks from overseas who will work for peanuts, relatively speaking.
Yeah. They call Americans "unmotivated" because they won't work 80 hour weeks for <1/4 the market rate. Dude, nobody can sustain that. It's actually not a smart way to do engineering work. There's high turnover and high error rates. So much of this conversation is so asinine.
I broke up with corporate IT in the US way back in 2016 after nearly my whole team got outsourced. Among other things, I couldn't stomach seeing the working conditions I'd hustled so hard to break into IT to escape forced on my new colleagues, while they fired half the Americans on the team. The new program was that the remaining Americans would be managing/editing the output of a steadily-rotating batch of H1B workers. I didn't wanna be part of the meat grinder.
My career is on the rocks, I am so disillusioned with American culture, politics, business. Don't get me started on everything I've seen SINCE I left corporate tech in Seattle to freelance and play music in New Orleans. I've taken serious damage, lost numerous friends to drugs and cancer and chaos. My older sister dropped dead while I was en route to NOLA. Everything creative I have tried has been met with violence. I got cancelled by a disgruntled ex, who died in a drunk driving accident 2 years later. Every profession is consumed by drugs, bullying, and sexual harassment, and most of the most beautiful and talented people I came here to fraternize with are either dead or moved away.
America is on fire. NOLA is still an international cultural treasure, but we're all VERY sick right now. Sicker than most people want to admit. The petty nationalism I see is one of the many symptoms. Myself, I'm barely healthy enough to work any more. I've been pretty prolific and led with kindness and civic duty, which has usually resulted in some nepo brat kicking me in the teeth. I have so many stories. The people with power in this country, political and economic, are insecure egomaniacs. The rot has been festering for over 50 years now.
I just wanted to write useful open source software and play music with my friends. Instead we get to watch the world burn and all the most beautiful contributors to our rich culture scapegoated and put in labor camps? (I think that's what the cop cities are.) I hope I'm wrong. Pretty spooked.
What a waste.
Dude, Elon, just pay a few billion more and wait a quarter or two, Americans can do good work. Smart and sensitive people have needs to do their best work. Like, health benefits and no genocide against my peers in the arts scene, and my service industry kin living above the poverty line. It's not a huge ask... What are we even doing here? This isn't smart. We're not smart.
BigTech wants to hire foreign software engineers because they come cheaper than US engineers of any color.
“The tech layoff wave is still going strong in 2024. Following significant workforce reductions in 2022 and 2023, this year has more than 130,000 job cuts across 457 companies, according to independent layoffs tracker Layoffs.fyi. Companies like Tesla, Amazon, Google, TikTok, Snap and Microsoft have conducted sizable layoffs in the first months of 2024. Smaller-sized startups have also seen a fair amount of cuts, and in some cases, have shut down operations altogether.”

He should be the first one on the way back to his country. We really don’t need him.
Looks like the whole world would be better off if he were prosecuted for fraud, stripped of his assets, and expelled. He’s a dangerous maniac, who appears to want to rule the world.
I agree. He’s a racist, sexist piece of dung.
Yes I like the idea of stripping him of his assets and sending him back to Africa.
Pretty sure they don't want him back tbh.
😂😂😂
lol. My goodness you’re an ignorant cunt.
Ha low IQ answer.
Ha! Look in the mirror! Bootlicker.
You made cunt?
You must be a cunt….better?
Gitmo. He is a danger.
He’s legal. There’s a big difference, but Democrats are not legal. There’s all kind of stores flying out there and none of them are true. I think Elon is too smart to have not come into the US legal
You don’t know, but are defensive anyway just because?
He’s not smart, he’s a thief.
Musk became a naturalized citizen in 2002.
So? The rules are all up in the air.
So what? Trump said yesterday that he’s booting 400K naturalized Venezuelans.
😿
Nah bitch! I know a societal reprobate when I see one. You’re a dumb cunt…. It’s that simple.
Bye friend

You do realize 'federally managed schools' is how the countries where the H-1 Visa highly educated folks are coming from right?
It works. Really well.
So get over yourself.
Go to D.C. to defend seniors rights??? Who do you think is ending taxing SS? You do know you pay taxes twice on SS? 🤦🏼♀️
If somebody had only told the rubes that billionaires were not the least bit concerned with their middle class problems…. Oh wait
We need more minority STEM programs. In minority areas. Washington State has them.
🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
This sharply captures their infighting and my amusement.
Please say it louder for the people in the back. If you are into polls-A recent poll showed most Latinos supported mass deportation. Black people were the least supportive. Go figure.
casual dehumanization ... this is the phrase I've been trying to encapsulate my feelings
Well, there's never been a shortage of those assholes who manage to climb to the top, and then promptly pull the ladder up behind them.
You’ve consumed so much propaganda that everything you just said is a lie.
They’re everyone’s issues - we’re all being exploited - some of us are aware , some aren’t as aware .
Musk-rat and Mama-smarmy: two more imbecile clowns in the big orange turd -clown's psycho-circus.
That about sums it. And then there’s the clown show of potential cabinet heads……
Unbelievable!!!
🙏🏼
This is not about race but you are spinning g it and making it about race.
This fight is about one color - green.
