Thousands of Black women tune into Zoom call in support of Kamala Harris

At its peak, organizers said 40,000 Black women and allies were listening to the Win with Black Women Zoom call.

Tens of thousands of Black women tuned into a Zoom meeting Sunday in support of Vice President Kamala Harris after President Joe Biden dropped out of the 2024 presidential race.

A who’s who of prominent Black women delivered passionate remarks about the importance of uniting behind Harris, shared personal stories about her, and how to best support her as she seeks the Democratic nomination. Fundraising and voter registration were key topics discussed as well.

Reps. Joyce Beatty, Maxine Waters, and Jasmine Crockett spoke on the call. 

Other notable attendees included DC Mayor Muriel Bowser, Maryland senate hopeful Angela Alsobrooks, Bernice King, Jenifer Lewis, Black Voters Matter co-founder LaTosha Brown, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc President Danette Anthony Reed, National Council of Negro Women President Shavon Arline-Bradley, Star Jones, Sirius XM host Reecie Colbert, Angela Rye, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority President Dr. Stacie NC Grant and more.

The Zoom call was organized by the network Win with Black Women, and moderator Jotaka Eaddy said it reached 40,000 attendees before it ended. The organization will send updates about Harris' campaign to everyone who registered for the call. 

It was announced that over $1 million in donations was raised during the call.

“We have a plan. This is not arbitrary. We are ready,” said Holli Holiday, another moderator. “We’re ready to get to work.”

Hundreds of attendees left comments in a rapidly moving livestream chat. “This is work. Roll up your sleeves we got work to do. Praying for protection and covering over all you sisters,” one commentator said.

“Fired up and ready for this moment led by an intergenerational legion of Black women,” another said. “Let's get to work. Let's gather our sons, our daughters, our nieces, our nephews,” read another comment. “Let's do what Black women do!”

Biden endorsed Harris Sunday shortly after he announced he would step aside and open a path for a new Democratic presidential nominee. 

“My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made,” Biden said in a social media post. “Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this.”
