Big win for Black voters in Alabama, Susan Lorincz charged, I saw "The Blackening"
Friday, June 9, 2023.
About a month ago, I watched an advance screening of the upcoming horror-comedy “The Blackening.” The movie is about a group of Black friends trapped in a secluded cabin and must fend off a demented killer — the stuff horror movies are made of. The movie, however, subverts the traditional horror film tropes by making the entire main cast Black. So who dies first? If you’re not a fan of the horror genre, don’t worry — there are plenty of laughs along the way.
“The Blackening” is based on a Comedy Central short that aired back in 2018. I shared the trailer in March and was looking forward to seeing a film that felt a little different from the standard Hollywood fare. I talked with Jay Pharoah and Melvin Gregg, who play Shawn and King in the film, respectively, about their hopes to see more movies like “The Blackening.”
“If this movie does good, it’ll show that you can have a film that is unique. It’s not casting the same people they typically cast and shows that a Black audience can perform. This isn’t a movie that Hollywood would typically make.” Gregg explained. “This was made independently. Had it gone through studios, a lot of times it probably wouldn't have been made because it doesn't check off the boxes that Hollywood typically wants.”
Pharoah agreed. “I think Hollywood is bleeding for fresh ideas just because when you have so many remakes and reboots, it's clear that the people in charge [have] run out of ideas,” the comedian said. “So people in writing positions like Dwayne (Perkins) and Tracy (Oliver), I believe they're gonna be able to further push the button and bring more stories and inspire more Black people who are trying to do the same thing.”
“The Blackening” will hit theaters on June 16.

New York City police stepped aside for five days and allowed Brownsville residents to respond to 911 calls, an experiment that organizers believe could potentially transform how law enforcement is conducted in New York. Workers from an organization called Brownsville In Violence Out persuaded people to turn in illegal guns, prevented shoplifting, kept a man from robbing a bodega, and more.

A fascinating read: The awakening of April — a woman in a catatonic state for 20 years — and the successful treatment of others, could help change how some of psychiatry’s sickest patients are treated. New research suggests that a subset of patients with psychiatric conditions such as schizophrenia may actually have an autoimmune disease that attacks the brain.
