'Black Panther 3' sets release date, unveils new key addition to cast

The Oscar-winning director made the announcement at San Diego Comic-Con. It was also revealed that David Jonsson will take on the mantle as the new Black Panther — the son of the late Chadwick Boseman’s character, T’Challa.

Fans were introduced to the infant version of Jonsson’s character at the end of 2022’s “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.”

“The last time we were together, we got to make a movie; we introduced a character who was the son of the character, played by the great Chadwick Boseman, our T’Challa in that film,” Coogler said, standing next to Letitia Wright and Winston Duke, who are set to reprise their roles as Shuri and M’Baku in the upcoming film.

“Today I want to tell you guys in this next film, he grows up, comes of age, and we had to find an incredible actor,” he continued. “You might know some of his work. He was great in a movie called “The Long Walk.” He was great in “Alien: Romulus.”

“Give a warm welcome to our new Black Panther. Mr. David Jonsson.”

Jonsson walked out onto the Comic-Con stage to roaring applause.

“I want to say thank you so much. Thank you Ryan, thank you Kevin, thank you to this amazing family that I have the honor and the privilege and the blessing to join,” the “Industry” actor said. “I actually don’t want to say too much because I want to let the screen do the talking. But believe me, the honor is entirely mine.”

A new poster for the film was also unveiled, and Coogler said it will be shot on 70mm.

Jonsson will presumably be joined by the legendary Denzel Washington in the upcoming film. Coogler said he wrote a role for the actor during a podcast appearance in 2025.
