For The Atlantic, Clint Smith explores the downstream effects of the Trump administration’s attack on Black history and how it has affected the ways schools, libraries, and corporations celebrate the February holiday. But “we don’t have to wait on the government to give us permission to learn a history we can reach for ourselves,” he writes.

You may or may not have heard of Edmonia Lewis, a 19th-century sculptor of Black and Indigenous ancestry whose marble sculptures achieved international acclaim. She was extremely popular in the 1860s and 1870s, friends with figures like Frederick Douglass, and was then largely overlooked. Today, scholars and artists are working to keep her story alive.
